Ala Moana Harbor Condominium, Hawaii
Originally built in 1971, this dark, closed-off kitchen with textured ceilings and drab decor was due for a kitchen make over.
"In a condo, homeowners can't do major renovations. Condos share common walls, and the space can't be expanded," says Designer, Michael L. Smith, CMKBD, of Kitchen Concepts Plus.
They reconfigured the layout by converting the U-shaped kitchen to a galley-style kitchen and replaced the dark mahogany cabinets with a light, maple cabinet with a white mist stain. These custom cabinets can be made within an eighth of an inch, which is important when building for small, precise spaces. They installed Galaxy black Zodiaq countertops to provide contrast to the light cabinetry. The long countertop curves into the living space inorder to connect the two rooms. The ceiling directly above it mimics the curve.
With the intent to maximize the condos' minimal square footage and to create a sense of spaciousness, the bar was designed as an eating area and office space by adding a cabinet for wireless Internet and a printer. A display case and liquor cabinet was added behind the bar with a place for file cabinets underneath.
"I am proud of this kitchen," say Smith. The homeowner is equally pleased.
